Through our functionalized lighting systems, Vital Vio offers astounding overhead illumination with disinfection that saves lives and protects environments to change the world. Through color mixing, Vital Vio lighting units produce white light inclusive of a new method of disinfection, allowing our overhead lighting fixtures to remove significant percentages of bacteria from an indoor environment every day safely around people. Vital Vio lighting systems offer drastic financial and health benefits to customers who experience losses or death from infection or contamination of processed goods.

Directly supported by Venture Capital, Angel, and state funds, Vital Vio has significant and growing revenue for its lighting systems and is executing a 10X capacity growth in sales and production over 2015.

Location:

Vital Vio is located in downtown Troy, New York, in the center of New York’s Capital Region. Vital Vio maintains offices in downtown Troy to create an accessible urban environment for team members seeking a cohesive work-life balance in downtown Troy’s historic downtown. Team members maintain either a walkable and social lifestyle in downtown or a quieter living situation in close suburbs or rural areas easily accessible.

Beginning 2015, Vital Vio will co-locate offices and urban manufacturing in downtown Troy in the Quackenbush building, a 50,000 square foot facility including other area start-ups and a 10,000 square foot Maker Space (The Center of Gravity), directly accessible to employees for work or personal projects 24/7.

Position Overview:

The Product Design Engineer will have core responsibilities of designing new products and making improvements to existing lighting products. Additional responsibilities will include design and delivery of physical systems including but not limited to production equipment, demonstration and test equipment, and New Product Introduction test parameters and equipment.  The Product Design Engineer will participate in cross functional team projects including production, electrical systems, sales, and marketing to support a variety of ongoing activities. Design, execution and management of internal prototyping, testing, and certifications management (UL) will be required.

The Product Design Engineer will be required to manage new product designs and existing product and systems revisions from inception to commercialization and be able to direct teams to complete projects per defined parameters including performance, budget, and schedule. Projects will range significantly in skill and challenge and will require the Product Design Engineer to utilize prior knowledge, rapidly develop new knowledge, and quickly obtain a high level of confidence in their decisions. 

Responsibilities Overview:

  • Design new lighting fixture products and modify existing designs.
  • Creates 2D and 3D models, detailed drawings, BOMs, and design documentation of sheet metal, plastics, optics, and additional hardware parts.
  • Fabricate or source model prototypes, test jigs, and pre-production models.
  • Develop products using off-shore or domestic manufacturing partners to aid in product design efforts.
  • Develop and execute well-rounded test plans to validate new product and revised design robustness.
  • Identify and source materials, components sub-assemblies, and manufacturing methods
  • Manage testing including thermal, photometric, water, field trials and Third Party Certifications (UL)
  • Design and evaluation of products, parts, or processes for cost efficiency and reliability.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis for product enhancement and ongoing production
  • Recommend design and/or material improvements for existing products.
  • Participate in pilot and pre-production runs for product launches.
  • Incorporate design for manufacturability, Lean concepts, and Six Sigma tools to ensure high quality product design and innovation.
  • Display a blinding passion for career focused work and development, along with a strong urge for continual personal and professional development in their field and personal passions.

Education and Work Experience requirements:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree or greater in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or a similar Engineering degree with exposure to electrical and lighting concepts.
  • Must possess the experience of at least one full product design and launch cycle and a demonstrated track record of product innovation.  LED lighting experience is desired, experience in other electro-mechanical consumer or high volume industrial goods is valued.
  • 3D and 2D CAD experience is needed, SolidWorks expertise is a plus.
  • Should have sheet metal or plastics design experience, Optical and thermal design are a plus.
  • Strong project management and cost analysis abilities are needed; The Product Design Engineer will heavily define the New Product Introduction process using prior experience and own the process across all participating team members.
  • UL experience is desired.  Specific knowledge of UL 1598 and 8750 is a plus.
  • Experience with high volume manufacturing and low volume, high mix manufacturing experience is a plus.
