Vague Answers at Seattle’s SSL Market Introduction Workshop

From one of our sources at the DOLED SSL Conference in Seattle:

The “LED Driver Performance” seminar was held 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, 14 JUL and moderated by Michael Poplawski, from Pacific Northwest Laboratory.  The speakers were from National Semiconductor, Marvell Semiconductor and NXP Semiconductors. After the 90-minute session, several audience members lined up to ask questions.

The people asking questions were almost all fixture people.  The first two questions were from presidents of lighting manufacturers—Terry Clark (Finelite) and Terry Walsh (Tempo Industries).

Each asked questions that resulted in answers that, to me, were very broad, vague and/or non-committal.  The bottom line is that the answers were not clear.  I’m not sure if the communications issue was because the panel was from a different industry or if it was just high-level ‘engineer-speak’.  Watching the expression of each Terry after turning away from the microphone gave me the impression that neither was completely satisfied with the response they received.

Third up was Mark Hand from Acuity Brands Lighting who appeared clearly frustrated, as his questions were not fully answered.  Mark said the speakers were demonstrating why lighting people call semiconductor people ‘chip-heads’.  He further indicated that they were totally detached from lighting, and the slow cogs in the whole machine.
