The Top 10 MUST SEE Products

Your humble team of judges worked very hard to narrow our list, but we could not help ourselves and ended up with 11 products.  There are some really great technologies and this is one of the huge values that LIGHTFAIR brings to our industry, as it provides the main venue for North America product introductions.   Below is our list, alphabetized by company.

The Crestron Zūm  is a simple wireless lighting control system. Each device is thoughtfully engineered to work together seamlessly. Setup is as easy as “pair and play” with a tap of the dimmer or keypad, or from the iPhone® or Android™ app.Even better, Zūm is affordable and highly scalable. Start with one space, or several. Even add centralized network management.

All the essential “building block” devices (wireless dimmers, switches, sensors, etc.) needed for dimming and automation are thoughtfully engineered to work together wirelessly. Setup only requires a few taps on a keypad, dimmer, or mobile app. Scaling from standalone systems to centralized building-wide control and network management is literally a snap. The Zūm Network Bridge simply snaps onto the Zūm Load Controller to add remote setup, daylighting, time clock scheduling, temporary overrides, and other advanced capabilities.

The Eaton WaveLinx Wireless Connected Lighting System is a simple-to-install, cost-effective wireless lighting solution that eliminates the complexity of code compliance and system commissioning, while providing a flexible and reconfigurable wireless topology for future space changes through an intuitive mobile application. The system lays the foundation for future data analytics by providing a connection to the building’s network and collecting data through a small light fixture integrated sensor.

The Echelon’s InSight™ Cognitive Vision System utilizes artificial intelligence in vision-enabled edge devices, optimized for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. With InSight, traffic data is collected and processed at the edge of the network instead of on a central server, and uses the Lumewave by Echelon® lighting platform to transmit traffic information, reducing response time and improving reliability.  This architecture enables faster action in response to changing conditions and minimizes network bandwidth requirements.

The Fluxwerx Fold is a linear pendant luminaire with minimalist, sculptural form and a unique void aperture that creates longitudinal transparency through the fixture without any horizontal or diffuse lenses. Featuring third-generation anidolic extraction optics with low brightness and superior efficacy, the luminaire’s vertically oriented optics result in an absence of glare. Its high-performance indirect/direct batwing distributions are separately dimmable and deliver efficacy up to 119 LPW with multiple CCTs, chromatic accuracy 200,000h.

This is the fourth product award in 2017 for Fold which previously was recognized with both the iF Product Design Award and as the winner of the LEDs Magazine 2017 Sapphire Award.

The Lutron Vive™ Integral Fixture Control is a wireless lighting control solution that can be integrated into any fixture without affecting the design aesthetic. This innovation has standalone functionality, but also works within the Vive Wireless Lighting Control System, a scalable, flexible solution enabling energy savings and comfort-enhancing benefits for new and existing commercial buildings.

The Vive Integral Fixture Control features occupancy sensing, daylight harvesting capabilities and wireless communication that is integrated directly into a luminaire and sent to the job site, pre-installed from the factory. This integrated control can be compatible with any luminaire manufacturer, providing designers the power to choose the right fixture for the project, while maintaining a single, simple control system. By providing a fixture-by-fixture control solution and eliminating wiring between fixtures, Vive Integral Fixture Control dramatically reduces design challenges, installation difficulties and energy usage. Fixture level control simplifies design by eliminating the need to take zoning and control wiring into account. Zoning of control and sensing can be adjusted at any time, even after installation, and individual fixture control enables simplified installation of fixtures without any extra modules, making controls a trouble-free, predictable step-and-repeat process. 

The Vive Integral Fixture Control ensures the lighting will easily evolve with the needs of the space. Individual fixture control and the Vive wireless app make re-zoning simple and fast, giving the end user infinite flexibility to update the space’s lighting as needed.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors' new high power DURIS P 9 LED provides versatile opportunities for high-quality and cost-efficient outdoor lighting. Until now, costly ceramic-based LEDs have been used for professional exterior lighting applications. With the DURIS® P series, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is offering epoxy-based packages that provide superior lumen/$. In addition, these same LEDs grant uncompromising reliability and performance. The DURIS P 9 provides maximum light output with a minimized 3.7 × 3.7 mm package size, enabling very compact luminaire designs with a best-in-class performance of 473 lumens and 164 lm/w. This is achieved by transferring our special automotive experience in combining competitive lead frame technology and high-power chips in the field of high volume products for General Lighting.

Philips Lighting introduced a simplified path to connected ready lighting with the introduction of Philips InstantFit LED T8 lamps with EasySmart technology. The first and only wireless, network-capable linear lamp retrofit, the Philips InstantFit LED with EasySmart technology enables intelligent control from the Leviton Wireless Room Controller System with the simplicity of a plug and play installation that reduces energy, effort and costs.

We broke our own rule and allowed more than one product from the same company.  The Philips InterAct Office system was just too intriguing to pass up.  InterAct enables building managers to reduce energy use by up to 70 percent, optimize operations and create a more comfortable environment without major office renovation. Available first in the US, it targets the 15 billion square feet market for existing offices in North America. The system, with lamps and luminaires equipped with sensors, is installed and operated by Philips Lighting as a managed service, dispensing with the need for customers to make upfront capital investments.

Rambus Inc. will be announcing a new family of off-the-shelf optical light guides that are used to create ultra-thin LED edge-lit luminaires for a broad range of lighting applications. The new products deliver the performance and efficiency benefits of Rambus’ proven MicroLens technology, which have shipped in over 4 million light guides and are currently used in hundreds of commercial fixtures. The new LED light guides provide the time-to-market advantage of standard products.

The LED light guides use MicroLens Optics with a constant density pattern that can be used in a variety of form factors and applications. They are particularly well suited for recessed and suspended luminaires in offices, schools, hospitals and high-bay buildings. The products are cost effective, energy efficient and provide greater control and directionality of light, allowing designers more time to spend on their creativity. The standard light guides are manufactured in our state-of-the-art, high-volume manufacturing facility in the United States.

 

The Rambus Light Guides with MicroLens Optics can be seen at booth 5806.

The new Selux Modular Column System uses an 8” diameter bollard/column platform to mix and match bottom, center, and top modules to create a multi-function product. Module options include twin spotlights, façade lighting, CCTV camera, USB outlet, and speaker. Now, designers can integrate multiple functions within a single lighting point and can even add to an existing project from the same design line of columns. It also allows mixing and matching of column families such as MTR, Corral, Inula, and Exelia top modules.

The Selux Modular Column System can be seen at booth 5827.


Originally the industry pursued the “3535” high-power LED and became accustomed to annual 3% and 4% efficiency gains, which helped reduce fixture cost while increasing efficiency.  Next the industry embraced Chip Scale Packaging (CSP) or mid-power LEDs, which was developed from the TV backlighting market. 

Seoul Semiconductor has developed Wafer Integrated Chip on PCB or WICOP  which is 10% brighter than the best comparable “3535” and 20% less expensive than the best priced comparable “3535”.  It is completely compatible with existing optics designed for standard “3535” and now available in volume production now with over 10,000 hours of solid LM80 data.

WICOP is also enabling RADICALLY smaller, lighter, and less expensive luminaire designs – not just 3-4%, but 10% at 20% less expensive.

Dan Blitzer, LC, FIES, is Principal of The Practical Lighting Workshop LLC, which provides marketing, communication, strategy and training services to the lighting industry. Dan serves on the Advisory Board of the Next Generation Lighting Systems design competition.  He is also a board member of the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education and a past president and current board member of the Designers Lighting Forum of New York.

Jay Goodman has been in the luminaire manufacturing industry for over 30 years as Principal of Westinghouse Lighting Solutions and Founder of LumenOptix. He is now Principal of Goodman & Co. giving guidance to other manufacturers specializing in Strategic Positioning and Channel Development.

Peter Jacobson has been Con Edison's lighting specialist, subject matter expert and liaison to the lighting industry since 1991. His responsibilities include support for their Energy Efficiency programs, Facility Management and Research & Development projects. He is on the Board of Managers for the IES New York section & a member of the IES Progress Report Committee

Lana L Lenar, is Principal of zeroLUX lighting design, an award winning and multidiscipline international lighting design firm based in NYC. Lana a past president and current board member of the Designers Lighting Forum of New York.
