The LIGHTFAIR Parties

One of the greatest benefits of running the EdisonReport is attending parties at LIGHTFAIR.  We receive many invitations.  After a long day at the show, there is nothing like hanging out with six different companies until 1am.

LumenOptix—Jay Goodman hosted our team at a suite at the convention center.  While the drinks flowed and the food was delicsious, we decided to pace oursevles.  Jay explained a few of their products but reminded me this was a party and we were welcome to visit the booth for more information.  We really like-onsite parties as it allows us to visit more companies.

Maxlite. The party began at 5:30 which is before the show ended for the day and our sources were technically still on duty, but as one of our East coast source explained, “ It’s really 8:30 p.m. EST, and we are 3 drinks behind.”  Maxlite displayed a rich  and diverse assortment of products and their booth was packed.

LUXIM held a party at Piero’s Italian Restaurant across from the convention center, which made it extremely convenient.  Pieros’ just happens to be a LUXIM customer and we were able to see Light Emitting Plasma on display at sunset.  LUXIM then walked a group of us back to the convention center to show their LEP on display at the entrance.  Lighting the convention center is a nice coup but after 10 hours we were trying to get away from the convention center.  (Full Disclosure:  Editor is affiliated with LUXIM.)

Valmont—Tom Sanderson hosted a large group also at Pierso's.  We have been to many Valmont events over the years in the US and Germany.  Valmont knows how to throw a party and their attendees are very diverse.  We learned of a Valmont video shot during a hurricane showing trees and debris flying everywhere, but the poles held tight.

Venture--Ken Hawley hosted a group for dinner, also at Piero's.  This was a private function which we were not invited. Somehow, we ended up doing shots. The exact same thing happened with Venture in Frankfurt three weeks earlier.  Deja Vu.

We appreciate LUXIM, Valmont and Venture all being co-located. It's like packing more LEDs in a die to boost efficiency.

The evening ended at the Belagio O theater where we ran into our friends from GE.  While the show was incredible from an imagery perspective, I didn't quite get the plot--but it was still fascinating.

It was a great night.  Making new friendships while renewing older ones is one of the most important benefits of LIGHTFAIR.  It's still about the people.

Oldenburg Electronics™ Receives Patent for LED End-of-Life Tracking System

Oldenberg.jpgMilwaukee, Wis. (May 8, 2012) – Oldenburg Electronics, a designer and manufacturer of electronics products serving the lighting, mining, defense and industrial markets, received a patent (U.S. Patent No. 8,111,388) for the LumenTrac™ LT1 Notification System.  These innovative new technologies earned a patent through the USPTO’s Green Technology Pilot Program in the area of LED failure indication systems. Product will be available Fall 2012

Licensing, OEM and Distribution opportunities are currently available.

As LED sources became viable for general lighting, Oldenburg Electronics heard architects, lighting designers, and interior designers voice concerns about the possibility that LED luminaires would not be replaced or “changed” once their output fell beneath 70% of their initial output (often referred to as L70 lifetime). Since LED sources will continue to lose output without “going out” like a fluorescent or incandescent lamp, specifiers saw a barrier to incorporating LED products into their fixture schedules. Without diligent adherence to maintenance schedules, illuminance levels could drop below design levels and leave spaces too dim to perform tasks efficiently or cause a safety hazard (particularly in stairwells and other paths of egress).

Based on this feedback, Oldenburg Electronics began developing a system that would provide notification, both through visual indication and through interaction with building systems. This notification would indicate that the LED source within a luminaire had reached the end of its design life. Every installation is different; LumenTrac focuses on monitoring the true lumen output of the luminaire, rather than simply logging on-time; external factors can make an LED source both last longer or fade faster than the commonly cited “50,000 hours” of operation before losing 30% of its output.

The LumenTrac monitors the output of a light source at the fixture level and sends a notification when the source has reached 70% of its initial output. Sensor placement inside the luminaire reduces interference from external factors and the measurement algorithm accounts for ambient light in a space for accurate notifications based on the true output of the light source. LumenTrac can be specified and integrated into most manufacturers' luminaires.

Future Lighting Solutions and LumenOptix Develop Spec Grade LED Downlight for Retrofit Applications

MONTREAL, CANADA (May 8, 2012) – Future Lighting Solutions and LumenOptix have successfully completed a project developing a line of LED downlight luminaires for retrofit applications to replace  recessed downlights of various sizes and light outputs.

The main challenge, initially presented by a customer of LumenOptix, was the replacement of 90W metal halides in their shopping mall. The customer’s goals were to reduce their maintenance costs associated with frequently having to replace bulbs, while also ensuring better control, consistency and direction of the light output. In addition, the customer wanted to see measurable energy savings and efficiency.

"LumenOptix is known for designing, high performance, energy saving fixtures that are easy to use. By partnering with Future Lighting Solutions, we could stick to what we do best – luminaires and optics – while Future Lighting Solutions provided expertise regarding parts, thermal and electrical design,” explained Jay Goodman, Founder & CEO of LumenOptix. Goodman continued, “We could not have executed this LED initiative without our partnership with Future Lighting Solutions. Their people and their service are top notch, and most important, their know-how and expertise with the technology allow us to stay focused on what we know best: specification grade luminaire design for retrofit applications. Most lighting companies do not have technology expertise and we have seen more than a few disasters from companies trying to work outside of their skill set. We know who we are and we view Future Lighting Solutions as an invaluable technology partner.”

The Future Lighting Solutions team, along with their global relationship with Philips Lighting, provided the proper driver, remote phosphor light module, passive and active heat sinking. LumenOptix took the technology parts and designed a set of specification grade reflectors and a patent pending mechanical mounting mechanism that allows for the entire luminaire to install into the existing rough-in kit in a matter of minutes. See the video at: http://www.lumenoptix.com/simply-revolutionary .

Installation went smoothly, problems of light "puddling" with the existing metal halides were eliminated through better, more even light distribution, and the remote phosphor light module created a pleasant light that ultimately provides 70% energy savings and nearly eliminates any maintenance costs for the next 10 years.

The fixture has become an entire line of downlight luminaires for retrofit applications, replacing existing cans 6"-10", and currently available in 1100, 2000 and 2800 lumen packages with more and higher lumen packages forthcoming. To see how easy installation is, visit: http://www.lumenoptix.com/simply-revolutionary .

Daintree Networks and Cree Provide Advanced Lighting Solution to United Stationers

Sacramento Facility to Save 91% of Lighting Energy with Integrated Wireless Lighting Controls and LED Fixtures

Mountain View, Calif.  – Daintree Networks, Inc., the leading provider of intelligent wireless lighting controls for commercial buildings, today announced a successful installation for the Sacramento facility of United Stationers Inc., a leading North American wholesale distributor of business products. With the help of Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), United Stationers installed an integrated intelligent lighting system consisting of Cree’s energy-saving LED fixtures and Daintree’s ControlScope wireless lighting controls solution in the location’s office and break room area. The result is over 91% expected savings.

“We’re thrilled with the results of this advanced lighting project. Not only are our associates pleased with their improved lighting and personal control, but we’re already saving substantial energy,” said Ted Pinnow, Maintenance Manager for United Stationers’ Sacramento facility. “The project came together quickly with painless installation, and I’ve been impressed by the seamless integration of Cree and Daintree Networks products.”

The project was undertaken as part of a research project through SMUD that examines the deep savings potential from combining office LED fixtures with advanced wireless controls. With the assistance of Collins Electrical Company, Inc., Central California’s premier electrical contracting firm, United Stationers replaced hundreds of fluorescent fixtures across the office with Cree® CR Series LED Troffers, reducing the number of fixtures and dramatically lowering maximum wattage while significantly improving light quality.

The solution uses integrated intelligent controls from Daintree Networks to save energy even further. Daintree’s Wireless Area Controller communicates wirelessly with the fixtures through an integrated adapter, and the facility has added occupancy and photocell sensors. Lighting settings, including occupancy, daylighting, scheduling and task tuning, are all managed over the Web through the ControlScope Manager software interface. Each occupant has also received a remote wireless dimmer, allowing them to set their light level according to personal preference.

“The United Stationers project is a perfect example of how integrating controls can dramatically improve the results of a comprehensive lighting retrofit,” said Dallas Buchanan, VP of Sales and Business Development, Daintree Networks. “Through our work with fixture manufacturers like Cree, we are making it simple for commercial offices to benefit from the combination of efficient fixtures and advanced wireless controls.”

United Stationers, which has an active sustainability program, has found that its associates are enthusiastic to save energy, even beyond expectations. During office operating hours, the Cree fixtures are set by ControlScope to automatically dim down to a permanent 35 percent light level, and many occupants prefer to dim them even further. The results have been dramatic, with over 91% expected lighting energy savings.

“We were thrilled to work with SMUD and Daintree Networks on this innovative project,” said Patrick O’Flaherty, Manager, Product Marketing, Cree. “The seamless combination of advanced LED and standards-based wireless controls provides tremendous value to customers, both in energy savings and in improved occupant comfort.”

(Montgomeryville, PA – May 3rd, 2012)  LumenOptix, a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative retrofit lighting solutions, proudly announces the introduction of its revolutionary new, American-made LED Retrofit Downlight Luminaire, or “LRD,” a unique and modular LED retrofit solution that enables a downlight of any make, model, or size to enjoy an upgrade in just minutes to energy-efficient, maintenance-free LED technology.

Ideal for atriums, lobbies, airports, auditoriums, and most other retrofit applications where downlights are used, the LRD delivers up to 70% energy savings and secures to the existing, installed rough-in kit via its patent-pending modular bracket system.  As a function of its efficient optics and proprietary LED reflector design, the LRD offers outstanding visual acuity, optimized cut-off, precise beam control, exceptional light quality, and consistent and glare-free light distribution.

Sporting a long rated life of 50,000 hours (L70), the highly-sustainable LRD is free of environmental hazards such as mercury and has provisions for dimming capabilities down to 10% via 0-10V or line dimming (if control gear is already installed into the existing fixture).  Best of all, the LRD fixture can be easily installed into existing wired rough-in kits from below the ceiling in just minutes without the need for tools, cutting, or mess, significantly reducing labor costs and concerns.

“Through our innovative new LRD fixture, we’re proud to offer the nation’s lighting users an easy and all-purpose way of upgrading most any downlight to the benefits of LED technology,” LumenOptix Founder and CEO Jay Goodman said.  “Following the LRD’s simple five-minute installation process, lighting users can begin to enjoy up to 70% energy savings, long life, and years of maintenance-free operation while supporting the worthy principles of green design and American-based manufacturing.  Most importantly,” he added, “the ‘light’ is what matters at LumenOptix, and our optical systems – from glare control and beam pattern to the low iridescent finish on our optics -- are engineered to the highest standards without compromise to the quality of the light.”

Proudly manufactured in America, the LRD is American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) and Buy American Act-compliant and is available in a variety of color temperatures and lumen outputs to support nearly any downlight application.  To see a video demonstrating how the LRD installs in just minutes, visit www.lumenoptix.com/simply-revolutionary.

Stray Light Products Bring Improved Security, Savings to Indiana Corrections Facilities with LEP

The Indiana Department of Corrections (IDOC) is working with Stray Light Optical Technologies Inc. to take advantage of the improved savings and security Light Emitting Plasma™ (LEP) offers.
Stray Light’s plasma lighting fixtures are proving effective in multiple applications including cell blocks, interior recreation facilities, fence line and perimeter lighting, parking lots, maintenance shops and more.
IDOC’s Wabash cell block plasma installation required less than one Stray Light fixture for every two metal halide fixtures they replaced. That’s 13 fixtures instead of 30 running at approximately 3900 watts versus 6000 watts.
“While the sustained annual savings of 40% to 60% in maintenance and energy costs and rapid return on investment make it an appealing choice for the corrections industry, the added security it provides makes it even more valuable,” said Gerald Rea, Stray Light’s CEO.
IDOC officials point to the gymnasium at their Putnamville facility as a prime example of increased security.
“We realized not only a 30% energy savings, but increased light levels of 250%,” said Kevin Orme, Director of the Construction Services Division at the Indiana State Department of Correction. “That equals a safer and more secure environment.”
Stray Light fixtures are also programmable and dimmable and can be equipped with motion sensors allowing for additional energy savings.
“Stray Light can customize any application to meet requirements and optimize the existing lighting infrastructure,” said John Garcia, Vice President of Sales for Stray Light. “Our products and technology make us an ideal choice for the Corrections Industry.”

Hubbell Roadway LED lighting System Exceeds Performance with 114LPW

GREENVILLES.C. – Hubbell Outdoor Lighting Inc. is proud to announce that the award winning Roadway LED lighting system has now exceeded performance featuring  114LPW.  The Roadway RM LED retrofit series features a complete 3G rated retrofit luminaire suitable for replacing most 150w traditional ‘cobraheads’,  producing 7378 lumens at an industry-leading efficiency of 114.6 lumens per watt (LPW)! Adura Technologies Empowers EnOcean™ Devices to Join Whole-Building Solution

Adura’s new EnOcean Receiver interfaces with EnOcean transmitting devices, adding greater functionality, adaptability and scalability to room and building controls.  View the diagram.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 1, 2012 – Adura Technologies, a leading provider of wireless lighting controls and energy management systems, today unveiled the Adura EnOcean™ Receiver and announced its membership in the EnOcean Alliance. The new Adura EnOcean Receiver marries battery-free, wireless building control devices to an intelligent, networked whole-building solution. Adura’s networked lighting control system will support integration with EnOcean occupancy sensors and switches.

“As the building controls market matures, customers need more sophisticated, interoperable and global systems. By joining EnOcean products to the Adura network, we can provide a unified building-wide solution,” said Mark Golan, CEO of Adura Technologies. “Our customers have the most flexible lighting control platform, which is able to interface with any standard light fixture, any standard occupancy and photo sensor, and now, EnOcean switches and sensors. The best part is that all of these products can communicate with each other wirelessly.”

EnOcean sensors and switches are self-powered devices, capable of wirelessly sending switch, occupancy, and daylight signals using EnOcean energy harvesting technology (no batteries are required). The Adura EnOcean Receiver listens to EnOcean sensors and switches and transmits the information onto Adura’s wireless mesh network.

Connecting EnOcean devices to Adura’s wireless mesh network adds flexibility, scalability and adaptability to the control system. EnOcean devices communicate via a point-to-point system – each component “talks” directly to one other component. This works well for single room controls. Adura’s whole-building networking platform provides greater functionality including secured communication between devices with Adura’s advanced encryption; remote

connection to building software; and the option to use advanced control strategies such as smart scheduling and demand response.

The green building specifying community has taken note of this important advancement.

“What really excites me is that EnOcean technology allows you to place switches and sensors conveniently to give occupants better control over their environment without the cost or limitation of installing wiring and without the maintenance hassle having to replace batteries throughout the building,” said David Kaneda PE, AIA, LEED® AP, Managing Director, the Integral Group. “Now you can integrate these simple EnOcean devices with sophisticated intelligent controls capable of dimming and monitoring actual energy use, and if it turns out that a location I chose was not optimum, I can simply move a device.”

Each easy-to-install Adura EnOcean Receiver can transmit data from up to 20 EnOcean devices to Adura’s network. The wireless mesh network’s multiple redundancies mean no single point of failure, ensuring that communication between devices is never lost. And, because the EnOcean Receiver translates EnOcean protocols to ZigBee protocols, communication between the two systems is seamless as far as customer is concerned.

“The future of technology will see the continued trend of devices and equipment becoming smarter and providing data to enable users to make better decisions,” said Jason Jeunnette of Kugler Ning Lighting Design. “Adura's system brings the future to lighting controls by distributing control intelligence throughout each fixture and networking them together.”

From the smallest room to the largest skyscraper, Adura and EnOcean change the game with fully wireless, whole building solutions in an advanced system that sets a new standard for building controls.

Adura will be highlighting its new Sensor Interface as part of the EnOcean Alliance showcase (#612) at LightFair 2012.

Q-Tran Launches New Product; Up to 600 watts

Q-TRAN, INC. Introduces our QTM-DC and QTM-DC+CAP power supplies powering constant voltage LED products with capacity ranging from 60watts to 600watt.

Q-Tran has developed several products to power constant voltage LED products; including 12VDC and 24VDC linear technologies, such as ribbon light. The benefit of using the Q-Tran magnetic LED power supply is that this product can be controlled with a standard, forward-phase control dimmer known as a Magnetic Low Voltage dimmer (MLV). Q-Tran now has available with a CSA listed to UL 2108 standard, 3 product categories that include a good way, a better way and the best way to power these types of LED products.

The QTM-DC is also a rectified power supply capable of handling up to 360Watts at 12VDC or 600Watts at 24VDC. This allows the installer or specifier to put a variety of LED loads onto one transformer. The QTM-DC uses a robust rectifier to enable the conversion from AC to DC. The QTM-DC comes with Q-Tran’s QT series standard 5 tap system, allowing the installer to have the correct voltage at the end of their run and not over-drive or under-drive the LED lighting.

The QTM-DC+CAP guarantees no ripple or flicker out of the power supply. This is still a rectified power supply with a choke but also includes a large capacitor which eliminates the ripple. This is the best way to power LED fixtures especially if the LED’s are visible to the eye. This is available from 60watts to 200watts in both 12VDC and 24VDC and also has 5 voltage taps allowing you to select a tap depending on your load, preventing the installer from over voltage issues.

The QTMeLED uses electronic LED power supplies. If dimming is required a 0-10 dimming module and wire for 0-10 wiring is needed. This is available at 12VDC to have up to 3 60watt power supplies or at 24VDC up to 3 100watt LED power supplies inside each QTM enclosure.

About Q-Tran, Inc.

In 1993, Q-Tran, Inc. was founded by John Tremaine, an accomplished lighting designer who was born into a family of lighting entrepreneurs and innovators. He began his career with The Miller Company, a firm acquired in the 1930’s by his great grandfather, who founded the National Electric Lamp Association (NELA) before selling it to John’s grandfather. In the early 1920’s NELA became General Electric’s lamp division in Cleveland, Ohio, and was later transformed into a prestigious research institute that is still thriving today.

The Miller Company, a lighting company specializing in fixtures used for commercial, industrial and institutional applications, was sold to John’s grandfather, Burton, Jr., who sold it to John’s father, Burton, III, and it is where John cut his teeth before starting a lighting design practice in 1980. In 1985 John opened Primo, a high-tech lighting showroom that offered a creative alternative to functional lighting and eventually gave birth to Q-Tran.

Q-Tran was established to fulfill a need in the lighting industry for flexible remote transformers that eliminate noise and heat while enhancing the quality of light output. Operating with the mantra “EnlightenedThinking®,” Q-Tran has pioneered innovative transformers and power supply centers to provide safety, reliability, performance and convenience. It was the first company to develop an entire power supply center designed specifically for low voltage lighting. Over the years, Gean Tremaine and Jordan Nodelman would take their place by their father’s side, helping to build Q-Tran into a leading designer and manufacturer of high-quality, power supply systems, transformers and components.

Bailey will be responsible for managing Relume’s manufacturing operations, including fabrication, population, assembly, and shipping and receiving.  In addition, he will introduce and implement lean manufacturing principles and tools to reduce cost, increase productivity, and improve quality throughout the operation.

“We are pleased to welcome Jason Bailey to the Relume family. His combination of education, manufacturing management experience, and his training and experience in the use of lean manufacturing tools makes him exceptionally qualified for his new position,” said Crawford Lipsey, CEO for Relume.

Bailey joins Relume from United Solar Ovonic, a manufacturer of solar panels, where he served as project manager, as well as the company’s operations and continuous improvement manager. In these roles, Bailey led a team of 12 supervisors and facilitators in production operations and he trained associates in the utilization of lean manufacturing tools, executing several Kaizen events (5S, standard work, and value stream mapping) to reduce material movement and increase throughput, balance workloads, and reduce labor costs. He was also responsible for managing the plant launch at United Solar’s Ontario Step 3 assembly facility, and establishing and managing a multi-million dollar capital expenditure budget for machinery moves, facility upgrade, and product launch.

Bailey began his career at General Motors, where he served as an industrial engineer and manufacturing advisor.  In these roles, he implemented lean manufacturing strategies to reduce costs, reduce downtime, and improve productivity. In addition, he implemented standard work to eliminate waste in assembly operations. He went on to join American Axle as an industrial engineer and was promoted to the position of general foreman/productivity manager, where he completed current and future value stream maps for a 1.1 million-square-foot facility, supervised teams in implementing lean initiatives, and implemented material systems to significantly reduce assembly line inventory.

A native of Ortonville, Mich., Bailey has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan. He lives with his wife and two children in Oxford, Michigan.
